Plus, Williamstown, New Jersey gives you the location for exploring a host of unique venues. Ever thought about visiting a marshland? Does it conjure up mud and reeds and swampy water? Well, The Abbott Marshlands doesn’t fit that stereotypical expectation.

The Abbott Marshlands is a place where sky and land meet tidal waters. They say that if you listen with engaged imagination, you can still hear Indian children playing, and the calls of mule tender jostling the mules to pull their boats through the locks of the D&R Canal, now a  recreational trail in New Jersey that runs some 77-miles that traverses three counties: a canal towpath from New Brunswick to Trenton; a canal towpath/rail trail from Trenton to Bull’s Island; and a rail trail from Bull’s Island to Frenchtown.

The Abbott Marshlands comprises 3000 acres of open space. It’s home to many kinds of plants and animals within diverse habitats, freshwater tidal and non-tidal marshes and swamps, ponds, and woodlands. The tidal freshwater marshes found along Crosswichs Creek and Watson’s Creek are among the most productive ecosystems in the world, rivaling tropical rainforests in the amount of plant production each year.

The rich natural history is complemented by a unique cultural history. There’s evidence that Indians lived there. Amazingly the area is also connected to the Declaration of Independence, Revolutionary War, and the Civil War. Thomas Paine lived in Bordentown, Patience Wright, while living in London, was a spy, and Clara Barton launched free schooling.

Within the Marshlands boundaries is the Abbott Farm National Historic Landmark, which includes the 1708 Watson House, the oldest structure in Mercer County. Notably, Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, lived at Point Breeze near Bordentown for many years.

Bonaparte slept here!

The Abbott Marshlands are located on the western edge of central New Jersey, and bordered on the west by the Delaware River, and are surrounded by Trenton, Hamilton Township, Bordentown Township, and Bordentown City. The Abbott Marshlands provide many opportunities. In brief, you can:
