If I asked you where you live, you would reply with a street address, city, state, and zip. And of course, you would be right, but not completely.
It’s unlikely most of us think about the planet on which we live, at least not since we were in science class. In fact, our true address is a bit grander: Planet Earth.

By way of reminder here are a few facts about your home that you have likely forgotten. We are the 5th largest planet in our solar system, the third planet from the sun and our waist size is a radius of 3,959 miles.
We are the unsurpassed fashion statement of all the planets, kind of a blue/green shinny marble on a starry backdrop. Should I brag that we are the only planet known to have water in liquid form. Oh yes, we are also named distinctly over all the other planets. They were named mostly for Greek and Roman gods. Our home however was named from the Germanic word The Ground, which translates to Earth.

Luckily, we can’t feel this, but our planet speeds through its orbit at a velocity of 18.5 miles per second. In terms of distance, we are some 93 million miles from the sun which is just enough to keep us from melting.
Traveling 186,000 miles per second, the sun’s light gets here in about 8 minutes. We orbit around the sun every 365.25 days which Leap Year accounts for. Our home rotates on its axis every 23.9 hours which provides day and night. The axis is tilted 23.4 degrees away from the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun, and that creates our seasons.
